What is ARTLAB-aps?
APS stands for Association for Social Promotion. ArtLab is a center for research, experimentation, and theatrical production based in Spoleto, Umbria. It was founded in 2009 in Rome, where it began and carried out for years activities of Study and Training, Theater/Dance, Music, and Cultural Events mainly in Rome, but also in Pescara and Abruzzo, and then continued from 2016 in Veneto and from 2023, finally also in Umbria. Since its foundation, ARTLAB has been active and operating mainly in the territory of the Municipality of Rome, but also in Spoltore and Pescara. For several years, it collaborated in the care and management of the Rete Associazioni17 and the “CCPP - Coordinamento Cittadino Progetto Partecipato” of Rome, the Municipal Theater of SOMS in Spoltore (PE), and the Spazio MATTA (former Slaughterhouse of Pescara). Later in Veneto, it organized seminars, workshops, theater labs, and shows, also for schools. From the very beginning, however, it undertook a path of collaboration with other organizations, with the Public Administration and local authorities, in the areas of planning, creation, and realization of cultural and artistic events, study paths, and training modules of social and general interest. In January 2023, it arrived in Umbria, collaborating and making available to the territory its experiences, skills, and expertise in Theater, Events, and Training. The meeting between the founders was both fortunate and fortuitous. Different cities, different stories, common passions, ARTLAB has been and will continue to be a collector of resources, sensitivities, and skills, focused on the primary needs of people and the humanistic evolution of communities. It is above all from this urgency that we continue to draw our vital strength. Starting from Theater, in its universal and symbolic expression. In 2009 we embarked on a journey with an unknown destination, guided only by our shared passion for Art and the constant respect for two inalienable ethical principles.
Freedom and Responsibility
Freedom and Responsibility, individual and collective. The initiatives and activities of ARTLAB are aimed at the person as an individual who is part of a community, at citizenship and at particular categories within it, such as children and their families, school-age youth and adolescents, often fragile as they are disadvantaged from an environmental, economic, cultural, or social point of view. These activities aim to spread empathy and solidarity, to create social connections and to strengthen civic sense, through the pursuit of quality of life and relationships, to encourage individual and group initiative, and therefore, through the exchange of experiences and stories of the people involved, to increase their skills and abilities. These years, in fact, tell a long series of events and interventions that have taken place not only in theaters and festivals, but also in various, different, and heterogeneous places such as public spaces, museums and monumental areas, biblio/ludo/cine/media-theques, schools, summer camps, penal and rehabilitation institutes, natural and/or historical and theme parks, which have helped to restore and create added value to the communities present in all those territories that include urban areas and metropolitan suburbs, villages and historic centers, areas with a tourist vocation, territorial contexts united by popular, rural, and artisanal traditions, etc. Thanks to the commitment of its members and the attitude towards collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas and expressive forms of Art, ARTLAB has been able to benefit from the dynamic, conceptual, and concrete contribution of a considerable number of internal and external resources, in the artistic and performing field, as well as in planning, organization, and implementation. Over time, these activities have strengthened and expanded their own and others' skills, in paths of mutual and open “exchange of knowledge”, continuing to prioritize sharing and listening in the realization of common and socially useful goals and projects.
In the year of its foundation in 2009, ARTLAB immediately undertook a series of actions aimed at fostering collaboration and dialogue with other Associations, which culminated as early as 2010 with the creation of the first network of Associations in Municipality 1 (formerly XVII) of Rome, aimed at supporting and developing joint projects between the Network, the Public Administration, and other entities operating in the area: the “Rete Associazioni17”. ARTLAB was entrusted with the Presidency of the associative network and its legal representation from 2009 to 2015. In June of the same year, given the success of the initiative in Rome, the first Consortium of Artists was created and inaugurated in Pescara, aimed at the recovery and management for artistic and cultural purposes of the "MATTA", the former slaughterhouse, on behalf of the Municipality of Pescara. In the building, of notable architectural value, known as “industrial archaeology”, from June 2010 to July 2013, the “Spazio Per-Formativo” area was entrusted to ARTLAB, which included in the programming of shows and training events numerous local and international artists. Both of the aforementioned networks are still active in their respective territories today. Alongside artistic productions, especially theatrical and workshop activities in theaters and schools, ARTLAB designed and organized the first edition of “StART!”—an event structured around a weekly program of shows, events, and workshops, as part of the “Estate Romana”, with the support of the Lazio Region and the Municipality of Rome. The event ultimately counted more than 2,500 attendees and was repeated with as many editions in the following two years. In 2010, ARTLAB designed and organized, with the support of the Municipality of Rome and Municipality 1 (formerly 17), the first edition of the “Festa delle Associazioni”, an event with entertainment, games, and a showcase of Associations, which saw the active participation of about 40 members and an audience of hundreds of residents. ARTLAB managed the organization of subsequent events until 2015, consolidating an event that is now institutional in Municipality 1 of Rome. In 2010 ARTLAB designed and organized, in collaboration with Magma Teatro and Emergency, the first edition of “N.E.T. - Nuove Entità Teatrali”. The event included a pre-selection process of incomplete first works and/or show projects by new Companies and young Authors, to be selected and included in a final event in which, over two weekends, 12 works in progress would be presented in the form of “Shorts”. A technical/artistic jury would award one of them a production prize of €1,500.00 and the possibility of an artistic residency organized by ARTLAB, aimed at the creation and distribution of the produced show. From July to September 2010, ART LAB received more than 200 envelopes with materials for as many show projects. It selected 96, 12 of which participated in the final N.E.T. event, which also included a brief debate/interview with the jury president Claudio Jankowski and director Silvano Agosti. The event, broadcast live streaming by PhTV and recorded on TVa40, had a total audience of about a thousand spectators. The following year, ARTLAB successfully designed and organized in Pescara the summer edition of “N.E.T. - Nuove Entità Teatrali / Beach”. Again with the support of the Province and Municipality of Pescara, 2012 was the year of “BINARI - Percorsi di Alta formazione Teatrale”. ARTLAB assisted in conducting three masterclasses with three major figures from the national and international scene, and then led the final workshop itself. The Living Theatre, with Gary Brackett, Teatro del Lemming with Massimo Munaro, and the actress, acting coach, and director, Patrizia Hartman. The program involved 25 young actresses and actors and led to the creation of the workshop/show “Lucciole per Lanterne”. In the three-year period 2013/2015, ARTLAB designed for Rete Associazioni17 and organized, in various locations around the city, with the support of the Lazio Region, the Province, the Municipality of Rome, and Municipality Rome 1 (formerly 17), two consecutive editions each of the Festival “PRATIcare” Meetings of Theatre, Music and Dance, and “StreetArt” event of Street Arts and Jonglerie.
Over the years, ARTLAB has received support and sponsorship for its projects from the Lazio Region, Abruzzo Region, Province of Rome, Province of Pescara, Municipality of Rome, Municipality of Pescara, Municipality of Spoltore (PE), and Rome Municipality 1 (formerly 17). It has organized book presentations and readings, and conceived and launched the editorial project “TC-TeatroContemporaneo” in collaboration with the news agency AGR Press by Maurizio Riccardi, a well-known journalist and son of the late Maestro Carlo, painter and historic photographer of Federico Fellini. In addition to a series of minor events, ARTLAB has mainly produced original dramaturgies and experimental theatrical pieces: “InterZona-ZeroNove” (L. Becchetti, music by M. Buono, lyrics by G. Nerini, as well as the production of numerous albums and compilations of emerging rock bands. It has benefited from numerous artistic residencies and has had its works hosted at some of the most prestigious theater festivals and competitions, both nationally and internationally, such as: Festival “Teatri Riflessi” (CT), Premio “Fantasio Piccoli” (TN), Fringe Festival (RM), “Estate Romana” (RM), “Aria Nuova”, “FNT - Frammenti di Nuovo Teatro” and “Scenario Festival” (RM), “Festimôme Art’Euro” Aubagne (FRA), “Festivalul Internațional de Teatru de Stradă” Clui-Napoca (ROM), “CIMA - Center for Italian Modern Art” NYC (US), “Noorderzon Festival” Groningen (NL). We apologize if we have not managed to mention everyone, but certainly a necessary note on the side: L’Aquila, 3:32 am, Monday, April 6, 2009. We cannot and do not want to forget the moment that (also) for us, turned a World upside down. That wonderful, supportive and “family-like” fabric, so typical of Abruzzo, of relationships among People, Associations, and Artists, of which the newly born ARTLAB, like many other organizations, is a part. In the period following the earthquake, we collaborated with associations, individual citizens, and committees, in organizing solidarity operations and events to raise funds and aid in support of the population affected by the earthquake. In particular, under the motto “..Let’s lift our spirits first, then things..”, together with the start-up “Palomar” and the association “3e32 CaseMatte”.
